The Brother DCP-J4120DW is one of the ink multifunction devices that can print on an A3 sheet in addition to an A4. Brother has adapted the paper cassette for this. The Brother A3 paper lies across it, not lengthwise as usual. Brother DCP A3 print itself works via the single sheet feeder on the back of the device.
The Brother DCP-J4120DW has what is important for office tasks if you can do it without a fax function. Up to 150 sheets fit in the paper tray – that’s okay for the price range. Handling directly on the device is easy via the touchscreen. The Brother DCP A3 printer menu structure is correct. Only the pressure point could have been a little more spontaneous in some cases. You have to open the multifunction device to plug it in. In addition to USB, the Brother A3 Printer comes with WLAN. For installation, however, you have to take the detour via the USB cable. Thanks to Apple Airprint and Google Cloudprint as well as control via the Brother app, the Brother DCP-J4120DW is ready for mobile printing.
Direct printing works via the memory card slot or the Pictbridge interface on the front of the housing. The duplex unit can automatically print on the front and back of a sheet. Extra: the Brother Multifunction A3 Printer is certified according to the Blue Angel – this is rare for multifunction devices of this size. With XL cartridges, we calculate 2.8 cents for the black and white sheet – not a bargain. The power consumption is unremarkable. In sleep mode without WLAN, the Brother DCP-J4120DW of 1.3 watts switches off completely after a while.
Brother A3 Perfect Printing Combination
Quality of the Brother DCP-J4120DW
When printing text, the combination printer produces quite light letters on normal paper, which are a bit rough at the edges. Texts and graphics, on the other hand, look fine on special paper. The color prints on plain paper lack some luminosity. On photo paper, however, this improves the quality of the photos. We find them very natural. In scanning, the sharpness could have been a bit higher. The sharpness of the digitized templates fades too quickly, especially in depth. Apart from the fairly strong red and blue tones, the color scheme is okay. We get good results when copying: the ink application remains a bit thin in places. Nevertheless, good details succeed – especially with the color copies.
Medium working pace
The Brother DCP-J4120DW delivers its strongest performance in text printing. The 41 seconds for ten pages of text are absolutely fine. However, the multifunction device visibly loses momentum in color printing and scanning. Ten color pages from Acrobat take 1:21 minutes, and a preview scan 12 seconds. Especially the latter time value is comparatively moderate. Overall, it is only enough for medium results in the tempo runs.
Conclusion – more of a home combination device
The A3 print function is certainly unusual on the Brother DCP-J4120DW. Otherwise, the multifunction device offers more normal fare but is equipped for use at home. The duplex unit for printing and the touchscreen are among the equipment highlights. Thanks to WLAN, the device is also prepared for mobile printing via smartphone and tablet. The page costs in black and white are a bit too high for the home office, even if cartridges with high yields are used. Overall, the device is more suitable as an all-rounder for the home than as a workhorse for pressure-intensive office work.
