Canon i-SENSYS MF645Cx 4-in-1 Colour Laser multifunction printer is included in the next generation of devices Canon is planning for a small business or home office. While the predecessor had to make do with a paper cassette for a maximum of 150 sheets of paper, Canon has increased the supply to 250 sheets in the i-SENSYS MF645Cx – that is commendable. There is also a single sheet feeder for labels and other special print media. However, this was already present in the predecessor.

The interface equipment also remains unchanged: with USB 2.0, n-WLAN, Wi-Fi Direct, and Ethernet-LAN. The Canon colour laser multifunction is prepared for all infrastructures. The touchscreen on the folding control panel has also remained the same. As with the predecessor, the pressure point hasn’t changed: It’s a bit spongy in places. With your finger pressure, you sometimes trigger actions that you didn’t intend at all.  Canon calls this the user library. Here the manufacturer has expanded the predefined variants. The Canon i-SENSYS MF645Cx is a 4-in-1 colour laser printer designed for use in small to medium-sized offices.

Canon i-SENSYS MF645Cx New Toner Generation

As usual, you need a system ID for all functions and settings, which is 7654321 in the factory settings. In contrast to the predecessor, however, we were also able to find them in the manual for the new model. We also think it’s very good that Canon hasn’t changed the duplex strategy in the i-SENSYS MF645Cx: Like its predecessor, the color laser multifunction printer can scan, print, and copy in duplex mode.

In the Canon i-SENSYS MF645Cx, the Canon all-in-one printer wireless uses the new toner generation with the identifier 054. The toner cartridges contain toner and developer. You don’t have to shake the cartridges or remove seals or protective films. The starting range for the black toner corresponds to a standard filling of 1500 pages. At 680 pages per colour. High-yield cartridges that come with 3100 ISO black pages and 2300 ISO color pages provide more content. Despite the higher ranges compared to the predecessor. The page prices are only slightly lower at 3.4 cents for monochrome and 13.7 cents for colored ones. Overall, however, these follow-up costs are manageable.

This also applies to the energy consumption of the Canon i-SENSYS MF645Cx – the reason: the color laser multifunction printer quickly switches to sleep mode, even if you do not change the factory settings. Canon justifies the behavior with the polymer layer of the toner, which does not require high temperatures in order to be processable. This means that the device consumes 0.6 watts (USB) and 0.8 watts (WLAN) in sleep mode.

Print Quality – three drivers to choose from

The new toner generation also has an effect on output quality: Print colors and copies are consistently slightly darker than their predecessors. In the case of pure text, on the other hand, we see no difference. The letters landed crisp and legible on paper – nothing to complain about.

In Optimum, you have three drivers to choose from: one generic, one for PCL6, and one for PS3. Most of the Canon printer setup options can be found in the PS3 drivers. Only here you can explicitly set the resolution to 600 or 1200 dpi, for example. In the test, the three drivers can only be loaded in the network (WLAN or LAN). There is only Canon Generic Plus UFR II via USB connection – a bit neglected.

The scanning unit is now a bit too sluggish for our taste: In the test, it only sends the scan to the computer when the slide is completely retracted. That wastes time unnecessarily. Compared to its predecessor, Canon has increased the working speed of the MF645CX from 18 to 21 pages per minute. In the test, this increase in speed only affects multi-page print jobs. However, even here it stays in the range of seconds. The current device delivers our 12-page color PDF in 51 seconds, and the predecessor in 54 seconds.
