Consumption – Low Price Per Page

Brother put together a complete package around the MFC-J1300DW, which the company calls the “all in a box”. In addition to devices for printing, scanning, copying, and faxing, delivery coverage also includes high-yield cartridges. The separate cartridges for yellow, red, blue, and black should ideally have sufficient ink content to run without a load for three years. In a footnote, Brother explains what this means: The promise is based on a print volume of 200 pages per month and a print ratio of 60 percent black and white pages and 40 percent color pages. Therefore, this offering is tailored for users who need more monochrome than color prints.

But even if you print more colors or generally achieve higher print volumes and therefore have to replace your ink earlier than the promised period. The follow-up costs of the Brother MFC-J1300DW remain very moderate. We calculated based on replacement XL cartridges and ISO specifications. 2.4 cents for colored sheets and only 0.75 cents for black and white sheets. The text side in particular is so cheap that it enters the territory occupied by multifunction printers with built-in ink tanks. While these achieve a lower price per page on the color side. They do require users to be willing to play around with ink bottles.

The Brother MFC-J1300DW proves to be inconspicuous in terms of power consumption. In the test, the energy requirement in sleep mode falls well below one watt when the device is connected to the USB cable. When connected to the WLAN, the multifunction printer requires 1.3 watts more power. Good: When switched off. The Brother model disconnects completely from the power supply.

MFC-J1300DW Inkvestment Equipment – All Interfaces On Board

When it comes to interfaces, the Brother MFC-J1300DW leaves nothing to be desired. In addition to USB and WLAN. The device offers LAN, Wi-Fi Direct, and NFC. The latter two interfaces ensure that you can wirelessly connect your mobile device directly to the multifunction device. At the same time, it is prepared for storage hardware such as USB sticks and SD cards and offers the appropriate slots. Despite the integrated fax function, the right cable is not in the box. However, Brother will send it to you free of charge if you wish. The company assumes that in many cases old cables are present and therefore save an automatically supplied copy.

The display on the control panel is touch-capable and reacts quickly and precisely to the touch of a finger in the test. The menu structure is logical, the icons are self-explanatory. The Brother MFC-J1300DW Inkvestment offers additional services via the Internet via two icons. Apps take you to other services such as the manufacturer’s Creative Cente. Which you can use to print out maps, games, or other templates. There are also other practical functions such as Scan to Mobile. This allows the scan to be sent to the mobile device. After scanning, you will receive a QR code that you read with a reader app on your smartphone. It contains a URL that you can use to load the scanned document onto your mobile device after entering an automatically assigned PIN.

Quality – Printing, scanning, and copying speed

The printing unit of the Brother MFC-J1300DW Inkvestment prints letters with good black coverage and only slightly rough edges on the paper. Color prints are bright and therefore rich in detail. The red and blue tones are a bit exaggerated but don’t stand out. We can see slightly pale skin tones in photos, but the coloring remains natural overall. We were less enthusiastic about the scanning unit: It produces dark scans in the default settings. Here you have to readjust manually in order not to lose details. How well this works depends on your patience. The lack of brightness also means that the depth of focus of the scans is low.

The Brother MFC-J1300DW Inkvestment achieves good average results in the tempo runs. For duplex printing, however, you clearly have to calculate more time. This shows 50 seconds for ten pages of text with only one printed side and 2:30 minutes for the same task with printed front and back. Striking: The length of time increases disproportionately when we set the highest resolution level. It took 3:23 minutes to print an A4 photo and finished printing in 1:31 minutes at medium resolution. Commendable: We get real 1:1 copies. We can’t find any cutting off or downsizing in order to put the template on the copy.
